Lera Boroditsky
今天的colloquium 請來史丹福Cog-Sci的 Lera Boroditsky 來演講,
講語言如何影響思維 (How Language Shapes Thought)
這種language relativity 的議題從 Sapir & Whorf 就一直是語言學家、人類學家、心理學家很有興趣的爭論議題,
她自己引用很多研究(心理語言學)來辯證語言的確在很多層面對人的思考有頗深遠的影響

[Linguistics] Mary Bucholtz talk
來這邊兩個學期,沒機會上到 Mary 的課,算是遺憾之一。
(她這學期有開一個Language, Gender and Sexuality 的課,可惜衝堂)
昨天去聽她的talk, 主題是"?Qu? Onda, G?ey?: Masculinity and Youth Styles through Slang"

[Linguistics] LISO conference
Monica 是UCSB畢業的,她現在在柏克萊當visiting scholar, 也旁聽 Robin 的課,
禮拜一最後一次上課時,她問我去SB的東西都準備好了嗎?
又很熱心地提點了我好幾個該去「拜訪」的老師和學長,
真是大好人........

語言學界的House
昨天上Conversation Analysis的時候講到 Harvey Sacks (就是 Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson 那篇的Sacks)
Robin說 Harvey Sacks is a wild man.
她記得某年LSA Summer institute 在 Ann Arbor 開,
她也是faculty之一,在那邊租房子,

[Ling] Empirical research

Zhuangzi and Huizi were strolling along the dam of the Hao Waterfall when Zhuangzi said, "See how the minnows come out and dart around where they please! That's what fish really enjoy!"

[Ling]

Lexicalization and Language Change
Laurel J. Brinton (UBC) & Elizabeth Traugott (Stanford)
Lexicalization, a process of language change, has been conceived in a variety of ways. In this up-to-date survey, Laurel Brinton and Elizabeth Traugott examined the various ideas that have been presented. In light of contemporary work on grammaticalization, they then propose a new, unified model of lexicalization and grammaticalization. Their approach is illustrated with a variety of case studies from the history of English, including present participles, multi-word verbs, adverbs, and discourse markers, as well as some examples from other Indo-European languages.
